High fruit prices attract thieves

(26/08/2017)SOME orchard owners in Kuala Nerang, Kedah, have to sleep in their plantations because thieves have been stealing fruits, Sinar Harian reported.
According to the farmers, the rise in local fruit prices contributed to the higher number of thefts.
Mohd Sobri Che Husin, 30, said he nearly lost some cempedak to thieves at about 10pm on Wednesday.
“Several rubber tappers I know were curious as to why I was still in the orchard that night and when they got closer they saw a teenager stealing cempedak from my trees,” he said.
After scaring the thief away, they found two sacks of cempedak, a bicycle and a long pole for plucking the fruit left behind by the teenager.
Mohd Sobri said cempedak sells for RM7 per kg; last year it was RM2 to RM3.
Another orchard owner, Che Rohana Abd Rashid, said she was the victim of theft recently.
“I know the stolen fruits will be sold in town,” she added.
