Drug lab in condo busted, couple nabbed

GEORGE TOWN (24/08/2017): Luck ran out for a couple said to be leading a “nomadic” life for the past one year while producing drugs at residential units in the state.
After moving into a rented condominium unit in Prai about one month ago, police nabbed them and recovered 9.8kg of heroin worth RM245,300 from the condominium unit-turned-drug laboratory on Monday.
The man, a 31-year-old contractor and his Vietnamese wife, 27, were said to be the “chemists” of the drug syndicate.
Penang police chief Comm Datuk Wira Chuah Ghee Lye said they were now looking for another man to assist in investigation.
“Acting on a tip off, a police narcotics team cornered the couple at the condominium block’s parking area at 4.55pm.
“They were searched and 4.5kg of heroin were found in the woman’s bag. The team was then led to a unit where they drug-processing-lab was uncovered,” he said
Comm Chuah added that in the premises, heroin (5.3kg), heroin base (4.15gm), caffeine powder (7.8kg) and other paraphernalia used to process drugs were recovered.
“We also seized cash RM7,175 and two cars worth RM92,000 which were obtained from the sale of illicit drugs.
“The man was also tested positive for morphine. He has 14 previous criminal records including 12 for drug-related activities and two others for causing hurt.
“Initial investigation showed the man has been moving around for his trade before the arrest. The woman has valid documents and has been in Penang since 2015,” he said.
It is learnt that the heroin was for local consumption. The couple has since been remanded pending investigations into the extent of their involvement in drug trafficking.
