S'pore Customs seize 3,200 cartons of contraband cigarettes from M'sian lorry driver

JOHOR BARU (29/07/2017): A 34-year-old Malaysian lorry driver was arrested by the Singapore Customs on Thursday for attempting to smuggle in 3,200 cartons of contraband cigarettes concealed among a consignment of wafer cup cones and chocolate dips.
Singapore’s Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said the arrest of the lorry driver was made after ICA officers at the Woodlands Checkpoint found something amiss with the contents of the consignment inside the lorry as it went through the scanner.
The driver was then directed for further checks upon entering the checkpoint gate at around 6am on Thursday.
In a statement, ICA said the total amount of duty, and Goods and Services Tax, evaded amounted to about S$248,320 (RM781,995) and S$18,400 (RM56,685), respectively.
“The driver, cigarettes and lorry were handed over to Singapore Customs for further investigations. The vehicle used in the commission of such offences is liable to be forfeited,” ICA said.
ICA said it will continue to conduct security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts of human trafficking, smuggling of undesirable drugs, weapons, explosives and other contrabands.
It also stated that the same methods of concealment used by contraband smugglers may be used by terrorists to smuggle arms and explosives to carry out attacks in Singapore.
