M'sian cyber security expert warns of more ransomware attacks after WannaCry, NotPetya

KUALA LUMPUR (29/06/2017): Cyber security expert C.F. Fong has warned Malaysians to expect more ransomware cyberattacks following WannaCry and NotPetya.
Fong, who is the founder of LGMS, a cybersecurity service provider said the Petya set a very good case study where old ransomware codes can be recycled like Lego-blocks to create a hybrid and more complex ransomware.
“In coming months, we can expect to see non-Windows based attacks, as the NSA leaks (the US National Security Agency leaked hacking tools have been blamed for the recent global ransomware attacks) are not just confined to the Windows platforms only.
“The next wave of attack will involve network devices, as we have yet to see massive network devices attack although the NSA leaks have been made publicly available.
“Network devices based attacks will most likely be DoS-based,” he said in a statement.
He also said that tech security firms’ stock prices will rise as witnessed by Sophos and Trend Micro back in May.
“Microsoft stock prices will rise as Wannacry and Petya incidents have already taught organisations around the world the golden lesson of not using pirated software and always to patch on time,” he said.
