Smiling Datuk remanded over foundation's funds

GEORGE TOWN (31/03/2017):  A prominent Datuk here kept his trademark smile and beamed at members of the press and the public as he was led from a car to be remanded over alleged misappropriation of millions of ringgit.

The 70-year-old businessman was remanded until Monday pending investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Penang branch into alleged abuse of power and position for gratification while he was the head of a foundation here.

The investigation under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 carries a jail term of not more than 20 years and a fine of five times the value of gratification or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

The Datuk was dressed in MACC lock-up’s orange T-shirt and black pants and was brought to the court complex here at 10.30am yesterday.

Magistrate Mohamad Amin Shahul Hamid issued the remand order.

The Datuk, who is active in the tourism industry and sports, later acknowledged press members and waved to them when leaving the court building.

On Wednesday, he turned himself in at the MACC office here at about 8.45pm to have his statement recorded.

It is learnt that no assets belonging to the Datuk have been seized by the MACC.
