Six nabbed in Pulau Besar drug bust

MALACCA (28/02/2017): Six drugs addicts were arrested by Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officers in a raid on the coast of Pulau Besar, about 13km from the mainland, on Saturday.

Kuala Linggi's MMEA disrict director Captain Mazlan Mat Rejab said the arrest was made at 7.30pm during a joint operation with the National Anti-Drugs Agency (NADA). "We have arrested six men, aged between 30 and 60, who were all tested positive for morphine during a joint operation with NADA which began at 5pm.

"One of them, a 30-year-old man from Johor, was also in possession of 2.95grams of morphine," he added. The other five people arrested were from Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Johor and two from Malacca.

Mazlan said the suspects have been taken to the Customs Department's jetty in Banda Hilir, to be surrendered to NADA for further action.

"They were being investigated under the Drug Dependents (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983 and Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he said.

He added that the agency would continue collaborating with other enforcement agencies to combat crimes at sea. “We want to eradicate the abuse of drugs among maritime communities especially fishermen, and to stop the smuggling of drugs by sea.” he added.
