Man jailed three years for encouraging Islamic State membership

KUALA LUMPUR (24/02/17): A contractor was jailed three years by the High Court for knowingly encouraging membership to the Islamic State (IS) terror group.

In sentencing Saidin Yaacob, 49, Judge Datuk Nordin Hassan said the offence committed by the accused was a serious one and that Malaysia is a peaceful country, which should not be turned into a chaotic state because of terrorists.

"The court has a responsibility to send out a message to the public that such crimes will not be tolerated as it can threaten the peace of a nation."

Father-of-two Saidin pleaded guilty to committing the offence at Lot 3487, Rancangan Pinggir Padang Besar, Jeneri in Sik, Kedah between January 2014 and September 2014.

Counsel Faizal Rahman, in seeking a lenient sentence for Saidin, told the court his client was the sole breadwinner of his family, a first-time offender and that he truly regrets his actions of recruiting members for the terror group.

Faizal also said Saidin looks after his aged mother, and his wife is not employed. Deputy public prosecutor Noor Syazwani Mohamad Sobry sought for a sentence to befit the crime committed, as it was a serious offence.

Nordin ordered the sentence to take effect from Saidin's date of arrest, July 18, 2016. Meanwhile, at the magistrate's court, a 37-year-old man was charged with possessing IS-related items.

Hasbullah Hassan was charged with having 10 videos and six images on his mobile phone around the HSBC Building 2 in Lebuh Ampang at about 12.20pm on Jan 29, 2017.

However, no plea was recorded from the unrepresented Hasbullah. Magistrate Siti Radziah Kamaruddin fixed April 24 for case mention. Deputy public prosecutor Munirah Shamsudin appeared for the prosecution.
