Man suspected of running amok, killing three and burning down home, remanded

KUCHING (23/01/2017): A man arrested in connection with an assault and arson case, which killed three people near here, has been remanded for seven days until Monday. Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Datuk Dev Kumar said initial checks revealed that the suspect is a local from Simunjan, and not a foreigner as previously reported.

“At the moment, we do not want to speculate on the motive, which led to the murders. “The 42-year-old is in the midst of being questioned,” said Dev when contacted today.

He added that police are currently checking the suspect’s medical background to ascertain whether he has a mental illness. A urine test will also be conducted soon to establish if he was under the influence of any chemical substances or alcohol when he carried out the attacks.

It was reported that the man, who works as a rubber tapper, ran amok and barged into the house of a family of 10 in Kampung Tumu at 3pm yesterday. The suspect, armed with a parang, attacked three members of the family before setting the house on fire.

He fled the scene on foot, but was apprehended by police in a nearby jungle area about four hours after the attack. Police also found a parang, believed to be the murder weapon used in the attack.
