Foreign journalists detained for trespassing on Gua Musang forest reserve

KOTA BARU (25/01/2017): The Kelantan Forestry Department detained two foreign journalists for illegally entering the state’s permanent forest reserve in Gua Musang today.

The two were conducting an investigative report on the standoff between Orang Asli residents and authorities over logging activities in the Balah forest reserve in Nov last year. They were arrested at 9am.

According to sources, the journalists were identified as Jules Ong and Chitoo, both employees of Singapore-based Channel News Asia (CNA). Kelantan Forestry director Datuk Zahari Ibrahim confirmed the arrests.

He said the two are being held for further investigation. The case is being probed under Section 47 (1) of the National Forest Enactment 1968.

Yesterday, the department detained five Orang Asli for setting up blockades to prevent loggers from entering their ancestral land, also in Gua Musang.
