Attempted Sg Petani bank robber allegedly stole RM120,000 from own company

SUNGAI PETANI (26/01/2017): The 50-year-old suspect in a botched heist at a bank branch in Taman Ria Jaya here yesterday had allegedly stolen about RM120,000 in cash from the private security company he managed. Kedah Police chief Datuk Asri Yusoff said the company filed a report yesterday evening after the theft was discovered, hours after the suspect was detained for trying to rob the bank.

Asri also revealed that police had seized several live bullets, ball bearings, homemade air guns and several firearm components at the suspect’s home and at his office in Sungai Lalang, Bedong. "Based on the suspect’s (testimony) we believe that the robbery was an unplanned attempt and he had acted alone.

"We believe that the suspect may have been facing (financial) pressure and was desperate for money. "This (is borne out by the fact that) the company he worked for found that he had allegedly failed to deliver RM120,000 in cash to a bank," Asri told a press conference at the Kuala Muda police headquarters here today.

It was reported that the suspect, who is also a retired army officer, had barged into the OUB bank branch in Taman Ria Jaya at about 8.35am, armed with a revolver issued by his company. A scuffle took place between the suspect, two guards and one of the bank employees, which saw him firing two shots, injuring one of the guards.

A police team, which arrived at the scene five minutes after receiving a distress call, subsequently apprehended the suspect.
