Syabu-making gang busted, 11 held

IPOH: They were not chemists. They called up friends over the phone to find out how to produce methamphetamine (syabu).
Their trial-and-error product was sold in Selangor, Penang and Perak.
For more than two months, this Ipoh-based drug syndicate ran two labs, unaware that they were being monitored by the Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID).
On Monday, the Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING), NCID and Perak Narcotics Department busted them.
NCID deputy director Deputy Comm Datuk Kang Chez Chiang said 11 suspects, including five foreigners, were arrested in eight separate premises.
Those arrested include six Malaysian men, one man from Greece, three men from Sri Lanka and a woman from Indonesia.
“We seized 16.8kg of syabu and 50g of ganja. The total value of the drugs was RM1.2mil,” he said during a press conference at the Perak police headquarters here yesterday.
He added the mastermind, a Malaysian in his 40s, was among those arrested.
All the foreigners had valid passports and travel visas.
DCP Kang said police were looking for one more suspect.
All those detained have been remanded until Dec 5.
