Man arrested for posting insulting comments about Johor royalty


JOHOR BARU (24/11/2016) : A 34-year-old man from Penang has been arrested for posting insulting comments about the Johor Sultan and Crown Prince over a public forum on social media.
Johor police chief Comm Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the arrest was made following a police report that was lodged at around 10.30am on Monday.
He said together with the Penang police headquarters' Commercial Crimes Investigation Department, they managed to arrest the man on Wednesday at around 8.45pm.
“The man was arrested at the Bayan Baru police station in Penang and we have reasons to believe that he was the one who made those comments about the Johor Sultan and Tunku Mahkota Johor on the forum,” he said in a statement here Thursday.
They also confiscated the man’s SIM card and mobile phone, which were used to post the insulting comments, he said.
“The comments he made threatened the peace and harmony of the state,” Comm Wan Ahmad added.
He added that the man was being investigated undaer Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
He stressed that the Johor police would not compromise or hesitate to take action against those who post such comments in the future.
