Special unit to counter cyberthreats

KUALA LUMPUR (26.10.2016) : A Cyber Defence Unit has been formed to detect and counter any cyberthreat to the country’s defence capabilities, said Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

The Defence Minister said the unit, formed last year, was part of the ministry’s proactive moves to safeguard the nation’s interests.

“Among the unit’s focus is to monitor and identify any potential cyberthreat that could harm our defence system and network.

“The unit is also tasked with improving the defence’s ICT system, as well as performing cyberforensic exercises,” he told a press conference after launching the ministry’s monthly assembly and innovative day yesterday.

The ministry had been working on forming the unit for nearly three years before it was finally established, said Hishammuddin.

“We are able to form the unit thanks to the cooperation of several countries.

“Not many nations with such an ability are willing to share it with us unless they trust our capabilities,” he said.

The unit has been able to detect and counter certain cyberthreats since its establishment but Hishammuddin said no details could be revealed, citing reasons of national security and the sensitivity of the technology and countries Malaysia was working with.

“If we disclose our operations in detail, then we are disclosing our capabilities to our enemies,” he said.

“If this cyberdefence initiative goes according to plan, I can safely say that Malaysia will become one of the top countries in the region in terms of cyberdefence.”

On another matter, Hishammuddin announced several housing initiatives for Armed Forces personnel, including affordable housing in Bukit Jalil here, Segari in Perak and Mutiara Rini in Johor.

“On top of that, some 4,000 quarters for the military and their families will be built early next year, but we realised that the army is in immediate need of such accommodation.

“Another initiative is the 1Malaysia Veterans Recognition Programme, where new houses will be built for veterans while existing ones will be repaired up under the National Blue Ocean Strategy,” he said.
