Passing cop vehicle leaves four robbers empty-handed

KAMPAR (31/10/2016): Four armed robbers were close to carting away cash from two automated teller machines (ATMs) when a passing mobile police vehicle (MPV) put paid to their attempt.

In the end, the robbers fled empty-handed during the theft at a hypermarket here during the wee hours yesterday.

Kampar OCPD Supt Ng Kong Soon said the masked robbers, armed with three parang and a crowbar, tied up three security guards at about 3.30am.

“The guards were about to take a break after patrolling the premises when they were confronted by the robbers.

“They were then locked up in the toilet,” he said in a statement.

Supt Ng said investigations showed that the robbers used an oxy-acetylene gas cutter and a drill to break open the ATMs.

“Checks showed that the robbers broke into the hypermarket through a glass door.

“We believe they exited through the same entry point,” he said, adding that the guards were freed by staff of the hypermarket about three hours later.

A report was lodged and police deployed a forensic team to carry out investigations with the help of a K9 unit.
