Housewife jailed two years for possession of photos related to terrorism

KUALA LUMPUR: A housewife was jailed two years by a High Court here after she pleaded guilty to possessing images related to terrorist activities in her handphone.

Justice Azman Abdullah sentenced Siti Nor Intan Shafinaz Johari after she pleaded guilty to the charge Wednesday.

Azman, in his ruling, said preventive action should be taken against those involved in such activities, as it could cause instability in the country.

“We should address this problem as they are using religion to cover up their activities,” he said.
The judge ordered the sentence to run from the day she was nabbed which was on March 22.

Siti Nor Intan, 27, had earlier claimed trial to the charge but during the proceedings on Oct 5, she changed her plea.

She was charged with having 139 images related to Islamic State (IS) items in her handphone at a house in Kampung Ujung Tanjung, Kuala Perlis, Kangar at about 8.15am on March 22 and was charged under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code.

In asking for leniency, Siti Nor Intan’s counsel Farida Mohammad said her client was a housewife and has an eight-year-old son, adding that she spent most of her time at home.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Mustaffa P. Kunyalam urged the court to mete out a deterrent sentence against the accused as having items related to IS was a serious offence.

Based on the facts of the case, the accused was detained by E8 team (Counter Terrorism), Special Branch, Bukit Aman at a house in Kampung Ujung Tanjung in Kuala Perlis at about 8.15am on March 22.
