Three nabbed over nasty parang slashing robbery at mall

GEORGE TOWN --- Police have arrested three suspects, one a woman, in connection with the robbery and parang slashing of a woman in the Kompleks Bukit Jambul (KBJ) car park.

The handphone shop employee suffered a deep cut on her left wrist before her handbag with the day’s takings was snatched.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the three suspects were caught in a flat in Jelutong at about 1pm yesterday.

“We recovered the parang used in the attack in Bukit Jambul and recovered the victim’s belongings and most of the money from a budget hotel in George Town,” he said after visiting the victim in a private hospital.

“We made the arrests through information provided by the public,” he said.

ACP Mior said one of the suspects also worked at the complex and might had been observing the victim.

ACP Mior said the case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing injury while committing robbery.

The victim said the incident took place when she was walking to her car in the complex’s ground floor car park.

“I saw a man wearing a face mask and crash helmet. I realised he wanted my bag but he slashed my hand even though I told him I would give (the bag) to him.

“He then fled on a bike ridden by his accomplice,” she said.

“I hope the complex management will improve security for the safety of the patrons as well as the shop vendors, especially for those who leave after the complex closes.”

The victim underwent two operations as she lost the use of her index and middle fingers because the veins in her left wrist were severed.

She is hoping to regain use of her fingers through physiotherapy.

KBJ managers are now planning to meet the car park operator to discuss security.

Complex manager Siti Rohani Ibrahim said that the new operator who took over the car park in November was still in the midst of upgrading the security system.

“We will suggest ways for the operator to upgrade security such as installing more CCTVs on every floor of the car park.

“We are saddened by the whole incident,” she told a press conference.

Also present was complex general manager Crystal Wong.

The victim was attacked and robbed at 11pm on Wednesday. She reportedly had RM12,000 cash in her handbag.
