‘Taxi gang’ busted with arrest of 14

PETALING JAYA --- First, they will pose as passengers to rob taxi drivers. Then, using the stolen taxi, the group will pick up unsuspecting passengers and strip them of all their valuables.

This has been going on since early this year with 43 cases reported to the police, triggering concerns and the setting up of a special task force.

The CID officers worked round the clock and succeeded in tracking down the group.

In a sting operation, 14 gang members, aged between 17 and 39, were rounded up in a series of raids around the Klang Valley.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Amar Singh said police seized two machetes, 13 cellphones and six vehicles, including five taxis.

“They have been preying on taxi drivers in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, robbing them of their valuables and taxis, by pretending to be a passengers. Next, posing as taxi drivers, they would rob passengers by driving them to a spot where their accomplices would be waiting,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Comm Amar Singh added that several victims were injured during the robberies.

All suspects have been remanded until April 4 to assist in investigations.
