Newspaper vendor robbed in Ipoh

IPOH --- Barely a week after a newspaper vendor was mugged here, another has fallen victim to robbers.

Ng Boon Heng, 62, was cornered by seven people on five motorcycles while on his way to collect newspapers from a distributor here at 4.15am Friday.

Ng said he saw the motorcyclists along the way, but never thought they would rob him.

"They cornered me along Jalan Chung Thye Phin," he said, adding that this was the first time he had been mugged after about 20 years in the field.

He said one of the robbers, armed with a steering wheel lock, searched him for money.

It was reported in The Star on March 27 that a 70-year-old vendor was mugged three times within a span of one week.

Ng said he lost about RM30 in coins and cash during the incident.

"After hearing about previous incidents, I did not take my MyKad and much money with me.

"I had just enough to buy the newspapers for the day," he said.

He added that his wife was tailing him in a car that day, but she did not dare do much in case the robbers harmed him.

Ng hoped the police would ramp up patrols near newspapers distribution centres to protect vendors.

"There have been six cases within a period of two weeks. I hope the police will look into these incidences seriously.

"Our lives are on the line while we try to deliver newspapers to the people," he said.
