Female teacher duped by cyber lover, loses over RM300,000

KUANTAN --- A female teacher at a primary school near Mentakab ended up losing RM392,800 after being cheated by a cyber lover.

The 43-year-old victim had befriended a foreign man known as Michael Saed through a social networking site in June last year, said Pahang police headquarters commercial CID chief Supt Azizan Md Isa.

He said the man promised the teacher a house, jewellery and cash.

"Throughout their courtship, the victim was swayed with sweet promises including jewellery and a cheque worth RM500,000 on her name to buy a house.

"On July 23 last year, the victim received a telephone call from a woman, telling her that the items sent by Michael had arrived in Malaysia. The victim was asked to pay the shipping cost of RM5,700.

"The victim banked in the money at a bank in Temerloh before being contacted again by the same woman who asked her to pay another RM20,000 for processing the cheque worth RM500,000," he said Thursday.

Supt Azizan said the suspect did not stop there, but continued to exploit the victim by asking her to pay the lawyers' fees and documentation, Goods and Services Tax (GST), as well as other taxes.

He said the victim who trusted her cyber lover even turned to borrowing money from loan sharks and her siblings, as well as pawning her parents’ jewellery, just to claim the gifts.

"Throughout the duration, it was found the victim had made 114 transactions at two separate banks in Mentakab, totalling RM392,800.

"The victim only realised she had been duped after finding that the items which had been purportedly sent to her, including the cheque, did not materialise, before reporting the matter at the Mentakab police station on Wednesday afternoon," he said.

He added that further investigations were being done.
