‘Family woes among factors behind rise in abuse cases’

KUALA LUMPUR --- Family conflicts are among factors contributing to the rise in infant and child abuse cases in the country, said Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun.

She told the Dewan Rakyat here yesterday, that based Social Welfare Department records, most abuse cases occurred in families with financial problems, parents who are drug addicts and due to family disputes.

“The incidence of child abuse is also due to parental negligence. Children whose mothers follow their boyfriends, illegitimate children, stepchildren and victims of abuse maintained by others are subjected to abuse,” she said when answering to a question from Datuk Dr Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali (PAS-Kuala Nerus).

Azizah said, based on statistics from the Social Welfare Department for the period 2008 to 2015 a total of 16,287 cases of child abuse had been reported.

In the meantime, she said, the National Population and Family Development Board (NPFDB) also conduct Parents@Work courses in an effort to help parents prepare themselves and enhance their knowledge and skills to produce a knowledgeable family and to live in a cordial and peaceful atmosphere.

“Through this course, parents have the opportunity to learn the techniques of balancing family and career responsibilities and acquire knowledge and parenting skills,” she said.

More than 31,000 parents nationwide have benefited from more than 700 Parents @ Work programmes held from 2008 to 2015.
