Boy not bullied into cutting his own tongue, say police

SHAH ALAM --- It was a self-inflicted injury in the case of the Year Two pupil who snipped off the tip of his tongue.

Selangor police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Samah Mat said their investigation revealed that the eight-year-old had hurt himself while playing with a pair of scissors during class.

“There was no bully as claimed by the child.

“The boy was playing with a pair of scissors taken from the pencil case of his classmate during class with 34 pupils and a female teacher in attendance.

“He then hurt his tongue by accident,” he told reporters after a ceremony to pin new ranks on officers at the Selangor police contingent here yesterday.

“So the widespread allegations of gangsterism and bullying relating to the case in the school were not true at all,” he added.

The deputy public prosecutor, said SDCP Abdul Samah, has decided to close the case with no further action.

The boy earlier alleged that five older boys in school had forced him to cut his tongue.

However, the boy’s mother, Siti Nurhuda Ibrahim, 29, insisted that her son was bullied into the act and wants the police to reopen their investigation.

She said she had her son had been transferred to another school near their home in Bukit Tinggi, Klang.

In Penang, Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the ministry would leave it to the Selangor Education Department to handle the issue since it was a self-inflicted injury.

“The department will contact the school’s head and parents over the matter,” he told reporters after launching a drug-free programme at SMK Mengkuang in Bukit Mertajam.

On another alleged bullying case where a Form Three student reportedly placed a hot iron on the stomach of a Form One student in a boarding school in Jempol, Negri Sembilan, Mahdzir said both the state Education Department and the police were looking into the matter.
