Arrested man turns out to be Good Samaritan

KUCHING --- A man who was arrested for allegedly abducting a seven-year-old boy has turned out to be a Good Samaritan, who had provided temporary shelter for the child.

Initial investigations showed the motorcyclist, 32, was on his way to the Gita police station when he stumbled upon an unidentified lady with the boy, Haiqal Husaimi Suhini near a petrol station in Jalan Astana on Monday.

Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Dev Kumar said the man was on his way to the police station to lodge a report over his missing wallet and documents.

Dev said the woman, in her 50s, had pleaded to the motorcyclist to find and return Haiqal to his parents’ house.

“According to the statement of the man, he was informed by the woman that she had found the boy crying and wandering aimlessly near the petrol station.

“Moved by the plight of the woman and worrying for the safety of the boy, the motorcyclist agreed to the lady’s request to look for his parents,” said Dev in a statement today. The woman, however, did not join the motorcyclist and the boy.

The man, said Dev, had in passing mentioned to the policeman on duty that he wanted to look for the boy’s parents when he lodged the report on his missing items at the police station.

He did not elaborate on how he had encountered the boy. After lodging the police report, the man continued his efforts to return Haiqal to his house but to no avail since the boy was unable to recall the location of his house.

“After several fail attempts, the man decided to bring the boy home, and look after him. “The motorcyclist saw the news on television about the missing boy the following day and immediately made attempts to return the boy,” Dev said, adding that the motorcyclist had returned the boy to his house in Kampung Sungai Laruh at about 3pm yesterday.

The motorcyclist left before the boy’s parents could get his personal particulars. It was reported Haiqal was playing alone when he was approached by a woman, who was clad in a baju kurung and headscarf, at about 1pm on Monday.

According to a recording from a closed-circuit television (CCTV) installed at a nearby building, the boy did not struggle or retaliate went the unidentified woman brought him away from the neighbourhood.

The CCTV recording also showed the woman had stopped a motorcycle before, left the boy with the rider and later walked away in another direction.

The CCTV recording led the police to the arrest of the man, who was arrested under Section 363 of the Penal Code for kidnapping a minor and taking the boy away without his parents’ consent.
