Trader hacked in vicious attack outside market

GEORGE TOWN --- A 48-year-old market trader was attacked by two men armed with parang and a steel rod in front of Batu Lancang market here.

He is now warded at Penang Hospital for injuries to his limbs after the 8pm incident on Sunday.

The victim had just closed his stall in the market when he was ambushed by the attackers who slashed and beat him up before fleeing in a car.

A witness who wished to be known only as Sasikala said he rushed over on hearing the victim’s shouts.

“When I got there the victim was grimacing in pain with blood all over his legs and hands.

“I saw two men fleeing the scene in a car,” he said.

When contacted, George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said police had recorded statements from the victim.

“We detained three people, aged between 18 and 31, to assist in the probe,” he said, adding that the detainees would be remanded until Thursday.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for intentionally causing hurt.
