Paralympian nabbed with lover near Thai border

ALOR SETAR --- A paralympic badminton player was arrested in Bukit Kayu Hitam when he tried to drive his 25-year-old Thai girlfriend into Thailand with a passport which was found with forged stamps.

The 28-year-old man was asked to stop his car at the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex on Saturday evening by an Immigration officer but he drove on.

Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration Department chief Nar Azaman Ibrahim said his officer had wanted to stop the car, which was coming from Kuala Lumpur, after he came across some suspicious stamps in one of the passports.

However, he drove off, leaving the travel documents behind.

“The officer then instructed his colleagues to tail the car which was then intercepted at the carpark of the Bukit Kayu Hitam Duty Free Complex, some 500m away. The two were arrested and brought back for questioning.”

“We took a closer look at the woman’s passport and found the entry and exit stamps to be forged. She has since been remanded while the man was released on bail,” he said.

Nar Azman said the woman would be charged under the Immigration Act for possession of a fake pass and overstaying.

The man, he said, would be charged with allowing an illegal migrant to stay inside a car under his care and obstructing a civil servant from discharging his duties.

“The black Mercedes Benz C200 driven by him was also confiscated as part of the investigations.”
