Man gets fine, jail for stealing woman’s purse



KOTA KINABALU --- A man was slapped with two months in prison and fined RM2,000 in default three months’ jail for stealing.

The unrepresented Nanang Saiful Atim admitted before Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus to stealing a purse belonging to a woman at Big Apple outlet in Imago at about 6.30pm, last Wednesday.

He was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine or both, if found guilty.

To a question by the court, Nanang claimed as he was paying for his doughnuts, he saw a purse left behind on the dining table and decided to take it.

The accused asked for leniency during mitigation. He also said that he wanted to visit the grave of his mother who passed away, recently. Insp Isfandiar Dr Jasdi prosecuted.

In an unrelated case, a 30-year-old clerk of a coffee house was charged with two counts of committing criminal breach of trust totalling RM4,293.14.

Sessions Court Judge, Ainul Shahrin Mohamad fixed May 11 for pre-trial case management on Anna Azura Noor Hassan after she denied the charges.

Anna who was a clerk of Starbucks in Warisan Square here was entrusted by the company to keep the money but instead has allegedly misused the money.

On the first count, Anna was accused of embezzling RM2,080 at about 8pm on Feb 4, this year.

For the second counts, she was accused of misusing RM2213.14 between 8am to 5pm on Aug11, last year. Both offences are framed under Section 408 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 14 years with caning and a fine, if found guilty. The prosecution offered no bail.

However, defense counsel, Aida Jaafar Mad Ariff applied for a minimum bail amount.

The court released Anna on RM6,000 bail in two local sureties and she will have to report at the police station every month.
