ATM heist using homemade explosives fails to bring out cash

GEORGE TOWN --- Homemade explosives damaged a cash deposit machine in a bank here early today.

Southwest district police chief Superintendent Lai Fah Hin said initial investigations revealed that a pipe bomb was detonated to blow up a steel cover of the machine. No one was injured.

Lai said closed circuit television footage showed a man placing the self-made explosives contained in a box at the machine in Sungai Nibong here about 3.30am.

"The bomb blew up several seconds after he exited the scene on a motorcycle. "The blast caused the cover to be ripped apart," Lai said.

Lai added that the overall structure of the machine was not damaged. Despite the blast, the cash inside the machine remained intact He said the footage also showed the man wore a helmet, gloves and a dark coloured jacket.

A passer-by witnessed the incident and lodged a police report shortly afterwards. Polis arrived to cordon off the scene.

A bomb disposal squad was also roped in to inspect the remnants of the explosives. No arrest has been made so far in connection with the incident.
