Two foreigners with explosives arrested

KOTA KINABALU --- Two foreign men, including a Bruneian, were arrested by marine police when they were caught with RM4,000 worth of explosives in the state capital on Tuesday.

The marine police also confiscated 100 units of detonators, eight rolls of wire, two plastic packets of sodium cyanide and four sacks of ammonium nitrate, said Marine Operation Force Commander ACP Mohamad Madun said.

He said the arrest was made following a tip-off of an operation taking place at a jetty here on February 23.

“After receiving the tip-off, our men immediately carried out surveillance and managed to detain a 39-year-old Filipino man at the jetty around 9.30am.

“Investigation then led police to the discovery of a box containing 100 units of detonator, eight rolls of wire and four sacks of ammonium nitrate weighing 100kg in a Daihatsu vehicle that was parked near the area.

“Further interrogation led police to the arrest of a second suspect, a 22-year-old man from Brunei, at a hotel in Bandaran Berjaya,” he said, adding that police found two plastic packets of sodium cynide on the second suspect.

According to Mohamad, police believe all the explosive items, except the ammonium nitrate, were brought in from a neighbouring country.

“Police also believe that all the explosives were to be smuggled out from the state to Brunei by road.

“Police also believe all the items were either for personal use or to be sold in Brunei for illegal fish bombing activity,” he said.

All the explosives, including the Daihatsu vehicle that is worth RM83,000, have been confiscated for further action.

The suspects are currently under investigation under Section 8 of the Explosive Act 1957, which carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine not exceeding RM10,000, or both, on conviction.

Mohamad thanked the public for their cooperation with the police and look forward to such cooperation in the future.
