Public road not for racing

KUALA TERENGGANU --- Public road is not the right place to carry out racing, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.

Liow said racing was an extreme kind of activity and should be conducted on a proper track which adhered to all safety measures.

“Speed kills. Go to a racing circuit to race and not at any public area,” he said during a gathering to celebrate Chap Goh Meh here yesterday.

Liow was asked to comment on a proposal by Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor to close certain roads in Kuala Lumpur at night to allow mat rempit to race.

He called for the proposal to be discussed further.

“We also welcome constructive suggestions to make the roads safer for all road users, including bringing to book all unlicensed motorists as suggested by the Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

“There are various programmes such as MyLesen to enable motorists to get a licence,” he said.

On a separate matter, Liow, who is also the MCA president, said the theme of the celebration was Unity, which he hoped would serve as a reminder to the people on the importance of staying united.

He added that the MCA had taken various measures to help their youths to venture into entrepreneurship and assist businessmen to expand their market via initiatives such as the Asean Economic Community, One Belt One Road and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

He urged the people to work with the Government to face uncertainties ahead to boost the nation’s economy.

The carnival event, which was jointly organised by Kuala Terengganu MCA and the state government, was also aimed at strengthening the relationship between leaders and the locals.

Later, Liow and Terengganu MCA chairman Datuk Toh Chin Yaw joined the locals to various cultural performances and local delicacies at the fun-filled carnival.
