Nine nabbed over involvement in human trafficking syndicate

PETALING JAYA --- Two Immigration Department officers were among nine individuals arrested for their alleged involvement in a syndicate trafficking Chinese nationals using genuine Malaysian passports.

The suspects – six Malaysians and three Chinese nationals – were arrested between Feb 4 and 24 at separate locations in Miri, Sarawak and at the KL International Airport.

In a statement on Wednesday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the syndicate’s agent, two facilitators and a runner were also among those arrested.

"The arrests were made under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012.

"Investigations revealed that the syndicate has international networks and has collaborated with its Malaysian counterpart.

"The syndicate paid RM40,000 per passport as demanded by the Immigration Department officers in Miri.

"They planned to use the passports to travel to a third destination by air, especially through KLIA," he said.

Police seized RM44,000 in cash, five genuine Malaysian passports, five genuine China passports and several mobile phones.

Khalid added that the arrests were made after police launched an operation to track and detain members of the syndicate who travelled to a third country via KLIA.

"The foreign suspects will be charged under Section 12(1)(c) of the Passports Act 1966 for obtaining genuine Malaysian passports illegally," he said.

The case is being investigated under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (ATIPSOM) 2007.
