KUALA LUMPUR --- A dead man’s alleged debt of RM534,000 has left his 51-year-old widow locked up in her own house.
Housewife Chan Choi Mee had to call the police for help when the gate to her house in Petaling Jaya was chained and padlocked on three occasions in the past two weeks.
Her predicament began when she discovered the so-called debt after going through her late husband’s mobile phone and finding messages demanding payment.
Her husband died late last month.
Posters had also been left at Chan’s rented home, telling her that she had to clear the debt.
She was given several phone numbers that she was required to call.
According to Chan, her 24-year-old son was also approached by the debt collectors who told him to pay the debt.
Besides lodging two police reports, Chan has also hired a lawyer to look into the matter.
MCA Public Service and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said he had contacted one of the numbers listed on the poster and asked them about the issue.
“We are not sure whether they are creditors or debt collectors,” he said, adding that they should have acted in a more professional way.
“They claimed to be victims as well but if that is the case, they should have acted within the law.”
