Three detained for suspected abuse of baby

KUCHING --- Three members of a family, including two teenagers, were detained by police in connection with the suspected abuse of a five-month-old baby.

The arrests were made at their home at Kampung Haji Baki in Batu Kitang around 6.30pm on Wednesday following a police report lodged by a doctor from the Sarawak General Hospital.

The female infant is said to have been brought by her mother to the hospital on Monday for treatment.

She reportedly told a doctor there that her child had suffered a fall three days earlier.

Medical checks were then performed during which the doctor detected internal bleeding in the baby’s head and eyes.

As no bruises were found on the infant’s body, the doctor became suspicious of the mother’s claim that the baby had suffered a fall and decided to report the matter to the police.

In an unrelated matter, a senior citizen suffered minor burns to his hands while attempting to put out a fire which broke out in the kitchen of his shop house unit in Batu Kawah yesterday.

The 80-year-old is said to have been alerted to the stove fire by a passer-by around 12.30pm, and burned his forearms while trying to put out the fire.

A neighbouring shop house owner came to his aid and used an extinguisher to douse the flames before notifying the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) of the incident.

The elderly man, who lives alone in the unit, declined to be sent to the hospital and was given first aid treatment at the scene for his injuries by the Bomba Emergency Medical Rescue Services unit.
