Duo charged with rioting and using firearm

  
KUALA LUMPUR --- Two despatch riders pleaded not guilty to rioting and being in possession of a firearm to hurt a TV station floor manager.

M. Tinesh and M. Arvendran, both 20, claimed trial when the charge was read to them.

They are accused of intending to hurt Ahmad Hawari Zakaria at Platinum Condominium in Setapak here at about 11.30pm on Dec 18.

If convicted, each of the accused could be sentenced up to five years in jail or fined or both under Section 148 of the Penal Code.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Jazilah Mohd Yushaa sought to deny bail, saying that it was a non-bailable offence.

Pleading for lower bail, their lawyer Vincent Chew Zi Xian said both were bachelors who earned a low salary and that their respective relatives were in court to bail them.

Magistrate Husna Dzulkifly granted bail at RM5,000 to each accused and issued an additional bail condition that the they must not disturb any prosecution witnesses.

Husna set Jan 19 for mention.

Previous media reports stated that the manager was injured after he was attacked by seven men in his apartment unit.

His sister lodged a police report the next day.
