Medical professor pays RM9,000 after ‘cancer diagnosis’

A MEDICAL professor who was holidaying in China ended up spending about RM9,000 on Chinese medicine after a “doctor” there claimed that he was suffering from cancer, Guang Ming Daily reported.

The professor from University Malaya said he was on a tour to Shanghai in April with eight family members when they were brought to a hospital by their tour guide on the last day of their trip.

One man, who claimed to be the dean of the hospital, examined the UM professor and diagnosed him with lung cancer.

Besides urging him to remove the tumor, the “doctor” also asked he to buy three months’ supply of medicine.

Otherwise, he was told that he might not survive more than six months.

Family members of the professor were stunned with the news.

So, they urged him to buy the medicine.

When he arrived home in Kuala Lumpur, he went for a medical check-up and found out that he did not have cancer.

When he called up the travel agent and tour guide requesting for a refund, they ignored him, the news report said.

Malaysian Chinese Tourism Association Datuk Albert Tan Sam Soon advised travelers to be cautious in selecting their tour packages.
