Johor enacting anti-vaping law

NUSAJAYA - The state government will soon enact a new by-law in the local council licensing laws to prohibit the sale of vape products following the Johor Sultan’s order for vaping to be banned in the state.

State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Latiff Bandi said a circular would be sent to all local councils for the ban to come into effect on Jan 1.

He said he would raise the matter at the state executive council meeting on Wednesday for approval.

Vape outlets are now operating under convenience store licenses. They will have to comply with the new by-law from next year,” he said.

Abdul Latiff admitted that the implementation and enforcement against vaping would be difficult, adding that the first course of action would be to prohibit the sale of e-cigarettes and juices.

He said under existing laws, those found selling prohibited items could be fined between RM500 and RM2,000 for first offenders while repeat offenders could have their licenses revoked.

State Health and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar’s decree was in line with the state government’s stand on vaping, which could bring more harm than good and lead to nicotine abuse by the young.
