Teacher denies ill-treating Year One pupil in school


GEORGE TOWN@17 SEPTEMBER 2015 --- A primary school teacher in Sungai Nibong claimed trial in a magistrate’s court here to mistreating a Year One pupil in the teachers’ room. Lye Yoon Yoon, 55, was charged with causing physical injury to the girl, who was six years and 11 months old, at about 5pm on May 11. The charge, under Section 31 (1)(A) of the Child Act 2001, carries up to 10 years’ jail, a fine of not more than RM20,000 or both. Magistrate L. Umma Devi allowed bail at RM9,000 in one surety and warned Lye not to disturb or approach the victim. It was reported on May 13 that the girl claimed her hands were tied up by the teacher for allegedly taking her classmate’s eraser at the school. Her mother, known only as Chan, 25, lodged a police report over the matter. Chan had also alleged that her daughter was not even allowed to untie herself when she wanted to go to the toilet at the school.
