Goldsmith shop robbery: Suspect changes story on tool’s location

KUCHING@25 SEPTEMBER 2015 --- The investigation on the much highlighted goldsmith shop robbery at Carpenter Street last Saturday took a slight twist yesterday when the suspect abruptly changed his story on the whereabouts of a tool used during the incident. State CID chief SAC Dev Kumar said at first, the 30-year-old suspect told police that he dumped a spanner believed to be used to smash the display case at the goldsmith shop into the lake at Wisma Baitulmakmur near Petra Jaya here. Police then took the suspect back to his house in Petra Jaya and managed to recover the tool – which turned out to be a torque wrench, instead of a spanner as claimed by him earlier. The suspect – an office boy attached to the state police headquarters – was arrested at his home early Tuesday following a public tip-off. It is reported that when police apprehended him, his right hand was bandaged – possibly due to cuts sustained during the robbery. Police also managed to seize from the house gold necklaces believed to be stolen items, as well as a blood-stained shirt that could have been worn by him that day. The arrest of the office boy led to the capture of his accomplice – a 30-year-old unemployed man – at a house in Kampung Gita, where police also found the motorcycle believed to be have been used by the duo as their getaway machine. Both suspects are currently under a six-day remand, with regard to investigation under Section 395/397 of Penal Code for armed gang robbery.
